Poul S. Christiansen (1855–1933)
Winter Evening, 1926–27
Oil on canvas
102 x 129 cm
In the autumn of 1926, Poul S. Christiansen moved to Frederiksdal in Lyngby, having had a new house built on a plot commanding a wide view of the Lyngby Lake. Here he had plenty of opportunities for painting his surroundings, not just in the studio incorporated in the design of the house, but also from a balcony and from a special extension at the top of the house, which offered an expansive vista of the lake and the surrounding landscape.[1]
Winter Evening was painted during Christiansen’s first winter in his new home. He has let his gaze wander out across a landscape awash with warm evening light from the setting sun, its glow reflected in the lake. The sky is covered in large, drifting clouds lit up in hues of red and purple, testifying to the artist’s keen sense of colour. Christiansen has employed impasto, sketch-like brushwork, a trait particularly characteristic of his late work.
