Tyge Axel Holm’s box for the David Collection is made of cherry from Bornholm. He describes the wood as follows:
“Very few people know that cherry from Bornholm is one of the world’s most beautiful carpentry woods. Its warm, golden glow and vibrant play of yellow and green make it one of my favorite materials. I have made furniture and turned objects from cherry trees that I have myself felled, sawn into planks, and dried. Cherry is not cultivated commercially on Bornholm, which is why there are big differences in the trees, where some sections grow quickly and others very slowly, providing great variations in structure and color.”
The pattern on Tyge Axel Holm’s box is a section of an ornament found on the upper part of a double door (inv.no. 100/2005) in the David Collection. The door was made of carved and applied wood in 16th-century Morocco. Although the ornament on the lid of the box is only a stylized version of a section, the reference to Islamic patterns is clear. The impression that the lines continue into infinity and are part of a larger entity provides a completely different experience than a random, abstract pattern.
Technique:
The cherry that forms the body of the lid was cut up, and two other species, amaranth and stained tulipwood, were glued between the pieces. All the parts were joined again and the individual lids were turned. In contrast to ordinary intarsia, the resulting pattern runs through the lid and can be seen on the inside as well. The box was also turned and the whole piece was lacquered and polished matte.
