Turkey through the eyes of a Danish photographer

The Danish photographer, Finn Larsen, made his first trip to Turkey in 1983 at the invitation of some Turkish friends in Randers. He has returned at regular intervals to revisit and photograph a country and a people who have captivated him both professionally and personally.

These photographs are personal portraits of Turkey. Not of its tourist attractions, but of day-to-day Turkey, with THE ROAD as the central element. On travels between 1988 and 2013, Finn Larsen photographed the selection of places that can be viewed here individually or as a group. Some of the places were registered at a distance, from behind the windows of his car. Others are close ups. There is no “route.” The trip is neither from east to west nor vice versa. It is a journey in the midst of it all. In the middle of Turkey. In the midst of its everyday life.

The David Collection is pleased to show Finn Larsen’s photographs in this exhibition and at the same time realize a longstanding wish to exhibit photographs of the Middle East – historical pictures or those taken by modern photographers.

The music in the exhibition room is from the documentary Crossing the Bridge – The Sound of Istanbul, 2005: “Orient expressions – Sheristan”, “Baba Zula – Kisaltmar”, “Baba Zula – Dub Hakiki”.
